For those of you who have been reading my blog would know that I’ve taken my “O” Levels just last year. And some of you might know that the results had just been released less than a week ago. So, in light of the national examination I had taken and just received my results to, here are my thoughts on national examinations.
PSLE
People tell you that PSLE is not that big of a deal and that PSLE is just a “stepping stone” to your secondary school. For those of you who have taken your PSLE would have heard this a million times (okay, maybe not a million times). And for those of you who have not taken your PSLE, well, you would hear this a lot when it’s your turn.
Anyway, I beg to differ. I think that PSLE is very important. I know that it’s quite unfair that you’re “planning” for your future in a way when you’re only 12. However, this is what it is, and life isn’t fair.
PSLE determines which secondary school you will be entering, as well as the class you’ll be put into in secondary school. And it’s during your teen years (12yo – 16yo) when your peers will easily influence you. It is during this period when you’ll learn about life lessons and important values, and these will be taught in your secondary school. Thus, it would definitely be beneficial if you enter a secondary school with great teachers and great company. These are the people who will mold you to become a better person because they can guide you and teach you right from wrong.
Therefore, I believe that PSLE is very important because it determines which secondary school you enter; affecting the people you surround yourself with.
O LEVELS / N LEVEL
Okay, so here comes “O” Levels and “N” Levels. I cannot firmly make a stand on this because I’ve only recently taken my O’s and I won’t be taking N’s. Hence, I don’t know what the future holds for me. However, I believe that “O” Levels are not as important as PSLE. Now, I’m not saying that “O” Levels are not important and that you can not do well for it. Yes, you would still love to do well for O’s because if you’re a Chinese in Singapore, there’s CNY and your relatives will ask about your results and you would definitely love to proudly let your relatives know that you’ve done well.
However, there are so many routes you can take after your N’s and O’s. I understand that if you do well for N’s you can either enter ITE or a Polytechnic. And even if you don’t do well for N’s you can either enter a private school or continue on to Secondary 5. Whereas, for after “O” Levels, you can enter a JC, a polytechnic, ITE, or a private school. (Private schools definitely cost more bc there are no government subsidies). There are so many routes you can take, it is only a matter of how long your route is!
Aside from the multiple routes you can take, I believe that your company in your respective schools would not affect you as much as your peers in your secondary schools. This is because you’re already 17yo – 19yo and you would take charge of your own learning. You would be able to differentiate right from wrong. For example, if you had a choice between partying the night away and studying for a test the next day, you would be able to make a decision. Yes, there would still be peer pressure and you might succumb to it, but you would still be able to make a smart decision. This is because you would already have values instilled in you when you were in your secondary school.
Okay, these are just my thoughts and opinions on “O” and “N” Levels, so I can’t say for sure whether these two examinations are as important as PSLE. However, I can safely say that PSLE is very important because it might (high percentage) determine what kind of person you turn out to be.
